In 1845 the Androscoggin & Kennebec Railroad was chartered to build a line from Danville Junction on the Atlantic & St. Lawrence (Grand Trunk) to Waterville, and the Penobscot & Kennebec Railroad was chartered to extend the Androscoggin & Kennebec line to Bangor.
